On records Sandy holds the second place in the worst hurricanes in history after Hurricane Katrina. Sandy affected 12 states, Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Virginia, with its destruction causing about sixty-eight billion dollars in damage. These states evacuated due to the fact that the tropical storm was moving in to attack the east coast of the United States. The storm was predicted to act as a immense and treacherous storm willing to engulf the whole east coast. Due to this storm arriving soon, the National Guard was deployed to these states to prepare for the storm and protect civilians. (Greenhill 1) “ 75 zodiac boats, 3,125 high water vehicles, 43 reverse osmosis water purification units, 3,535 generators, 726 debris-clearance vehicles,” stated by Army Sgt. first class Jim Greenhill, National Guard Bureau, were used during the 10 days that Sandy remained active. Greenhill states,” On October 30, 2012, more than 7,400 members of the National Guard had been mobilized in 11 states to respond to hurricane Sandy by 4:30 a.m. and more are on the way.” (Greenhill 1) “The National Guard takes its missions from the governor, and they’re supporting the first responders, so when the capabilities of the first responders have been exceeded, then the National Guard is called in to support,” says General Frank Grass. (Greenhill 1-2) The national Guard’s mission during this storm is to help civilians recover from the horrible storm. The National Guard went house-to-house door-to-door checking on all the damage that occurred and checked through the remainings of houses for survivors. People that were found in debris were escorted to a shelter where they received supplies such as food and water and also rendered aid. While moving from house-to-house the Guardsmen used running

Knowledge about Hurricane recovery as a process and as a definable component of the emergency management cycle was slim. There was little interest in the process per se. Only one of four counties visited had a completed recovery component in its emergency management plan at the time of Hugo hit. This Deficiency was tied in with the generally low level of knowledge, experience, and functional skill in emergency management (Donal D. Hook, September 10-22, 1989 (SPRING 1991)). 2.…

The ability to predict precisely when and where the next natural disaster, industrial accident, or terrorist attack will strike is limited. And, given the circumstances and difficulty of predicting which adversary will strike and how it will strike, DHS did the best they could. When it came to natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina. A main circumstances of DHS leadership failing was the inability to understand Katrina as an incident of national significance on par with September 11 2001 (9/11). Instead, they responded to the disaster as if it was a routine natural disaster until it was too late.…

Rainfall topped fifty inches in some areas, which resulted in massive flooding and homes being overtaken by water. Though Harvey was noticeably less damaging than Katrina, the costs for damages were around the same. Fortunately, the death toll stayed under one hundred just as it became the country’s first major hurricane since Wilma in October 2005. Despite their differences, the two infamous storms also share some similarities. Many Americans during both of these hurricanes indirectly and directly helped by donating or volunteering.…

Thousands of impoverished people were without transportation, had serious health issues, did not have televisions or radios, thus, they were unaware of the severity of the storm; others lacked either resources to stay in hotels or unavailability of friends and/or family to accommodate them in distant areas. Government officials failed to respond to the situation at hand in a timely fashion and President Bush praised his “crony” of FEMA for his “excellent work,” while those stranded in New Orleans were televised begging for water and food from rooftops and freeways. By mid-September, Bush declared “one of the largest reconstruction efforts the nation has ever seen” and allotted $110 billion for the restoration of New Orleans. However, one year later, the Bush…

The year was 2005, it seems like it wasn’t that long ago , but it has been nearly 11 years since the natural disaster named Hurricane Katrina came through and devastated the city of New Orleans. The Hurricane Katrina aftermath left 80% of the city underwater and 25,000 thousands of people displaced, stranded and in despair seeking refuge inside the Louisiana Super Dome. More than 1500 people died after the levees broke letting water from the Mississippi River flood most of the city. Nearly seventy-one billion dollars in funds has been spent to help the people of New Orleans with the recovery process. My stance is in opposition of the process of these recovery efforts that have taken place.…

Hurricane Katrina Hurricane Katrina has been one the most devastating natural disasters to hit USA ever costing a total of 125 billion dollars, and leaving almost 1000 dead. We need to look at ways of preventing such a disaster. As this is the only problem, we can predict and perceive how dangerous a hurricane can be but preventing one is a different matter entirely.
