Biosurveillance is the term used to describe the collection and interpretation of data in order to identify, prevent, and/or mitigate threats to the health of people, plants, and animals. Epidemiologic surveillance is the segment of biosurveillance that relates to human health. The purpose of biosurveillance is to provide an early detection and warning system for diseases that jeopardize the public health, allowing for the rapid deployment of life-saving actions and improvement of patient outcomes.
Biosurveillance is a national security imperative. In 2007, Congress established the National Biosurveillance Integration Center within the Department of Homeland Security. This agency promotes the expansion of the Health Information Exchange
