Racism In Colin Kaepernick's Violent Campaigns

Introduction In 2016, 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick kneeled during the national anthem as a symbolic protest for police violence against African Americans. Although his actions were peaceful and non-disruptive (acts usually favored by Americans), it aroused a controversy in the nation.
First Perspective: Donald Trump
President Trump made his opinion on the controversy clear; He does not support Kaepernick and his protest. In fact, he declared “for protesting players to be fired” (Herald) during his campaign rally. His actions clearly show his stance on the matter by calling for the participating players to be fired, which would not have happened if he supported Kaepernick and his actions. The President, in another response to the protest,

It has lived in the country for centuries and people will not changes their minds nor their ancestor’s teachings. Racism is a five-thousand-piece puzzle of a solid color (practically impossible to solve) and ““it’s not going to happen overnight to fix these issues”’ 49ers Ried (Jenkins). When more people are ready to accept other races as people and see them as Americans, actions can begin.

Secondly, young children would need to be removed from the negativity, enforcing teachers and parents to spread the positivity and demolish the hate. Thirdly, the government would be cracking down on TV shows, online entertainment, and that encourage or suggest the hate by limiting them or stopping them completely. Once the course of actions is completed, people would be living in a world were one more problem is solved. Finally coming a step closer to the true American

Standing Up Who knew you could stand up for what you believe in by sitting down? Colin Kaepernick, the quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, was doing exactly that when he sat down during the playing of the national anthem before a pro-football game; I agree and approve of what he did. He was protesting the different treatment of colored people and also the cops. After reading the article, ¨In the `Land of the Free,` Are You Free to Sit Out the National Anthem?¨ by Jaweed Kaleem, I learned that Colin Kaepernick is not the only one taking a stand.…

This article, written by Marc Thiessen, really appeals to the pathos of the American People. He brings in historical references to the country from whom we won independence, stating that the players respected their song but not the national anthem of the United States. He mentions that the day of this protest was on National Gold Star Mother’s Day, this was in an effort to again appeal to pathos. Thiessen uses a quote from a mother of a deceased Veterans to add to his pathos. While I do not agree with this point of view I understand where he is coming from.…

Lately, many issues about expressing political views publicly have surfaced. People have been protesting during the national anthem, this, in turn, is causing an uprising about when should people be allowed to protest. People should be able to protest whenever they feel like because that is part of their constitutional right to freedom of speech. Toni Smith author of “A Leader is More Than a Messenger” writes about how everything is advertised during major events. She goes on to explain how sports are filled with political messages even though they relate nothing to the sport itself.…

On August 26th, the San Francisco 49ers hosted the Green Bay Packers for a preseason exhibition game. Normally, there is little attention given to these games because they are played with the sole purpose of evaluating the progress of players before the regular season begins. This game, however, ended up receiving worldwide attention for something that happened before the game had even started. Colin Kaepernick, the current backup-QB for the 49ers, made headlines by choosing not to stand during the playing of the national anthem of the United States. Kaepernick justified his actions by saying that he doesn’t support the nation’s recent acts of police brutality as well as the unequal treatment of minorities.…

In the days that followed the president issued a series of tweets reiterating his views and calling for a fan boycott of games” (The Associated Press). Donald Trump using his platform as president in this matter is inevitably creating this conception of “A Nation Divided”. This statement is forcing society to take either the side of President Donald Trump’s dislike of the protest or the side of “Sports United”. This symbolically gestures that due to Donald Trump’s superior influential platform that his declarations and positions take precedence over that of professional athletes. Although, The Associated Press presents the audience with these two colliding views they still make it evident that you should be educated on each side of the spectrum, “racial injustice and police mistreatment of African-Americans has become obscured by the narrower issue of how to act during the anthem.…

According to Irving Janes (1972), groupthink occurs when a group makes an irrational decision because of group pressure fostering and the deterioration of ‘mental efficiency, reality testing, and moral judgement” (Irving, Janis, Victims of groupthink, p.9). Social influence is the effect that people have upon the beliefs or behaviors of others (Aaronson, 2004). Both groupthink and social influence theory have a factor in what we see as an ongoing reaction to the silent protest started by Colin Kaepernick in August 2016. In recent news on October 1, 2017 during a game between the Arizona Cardinals and the San Francisco 49ers, about 30 of the 49ers players took a knee during the national anthem.…

Fifty years after Muhammad Ali’s protest of the draft and forty-eight years after Tommie Smith and John Carlos raised their fist for human rights, athletes today are still using their platform to speak out against the injustices in America.
