Point of View

The Scarlet Letter is written in third person omniscient and in the past tense. By incorporating third person omniscient, the narrator is able to tell the story from one viewpoint that shows he knows more about the characters than they know about themselves. Furthermore, the narrator occasionally assimilated his own opinions.

Like many symbolic figures, The Scarlet Letter has an immense amount of symbols. The historical fiction novel starts off with its first symbol, “the door of which was heavily timbered with oak, and studded with iron spikes”(Hawthorne 45). This representation of a door illustrates a prison door and possibly rasping justice. Moreover, in front of the prison door, there is a rose bush, “a wild rose bush… to offer their fragrance and fragile beauty” (Hawthorne 45), which symbolizes kindness as it condemned and pitied the criminal with the love of nature. Hawthorne also uses the rosebush to foreshadow the upcoming issues of punishment versus forgiveness. Another symbol found in The Scarlet Letter, is the red mark on Dimmesdale’s chest. “QUOTE”(167). EXPLANATION. The black man is also another symbol found in the novel. “QUOTE” (somewhere in ch …show more content…
I did not expect any lasting impact (since not many books I have read are interesting); however, after reading this novel I can say I will never keep secrets. The effect of secrecy in the novel caused disintegration within one’s head. One of the many strengths that the novel demonstrated was the consistent use of symbolism. Another strength was the short chapters which actually motivated me to read. A weakness that the novel had was the introduction that threw me off course. Hester Prynne had some guts to cheat on her husband! I understand it was because she was “in love” with the minister but it was a dirty act to commit. This novel was understandable after have watching “Easy A” which is a more 21 century version of “being a ‘dirty’ female”. Just like in the The Scarlet Letter, in the movie “Easy A”, Olive Penderghast had to wear a letter “A” after having a “relationship” with a fellow classmate. However, unlike The Scarlet Letter, Penderghast never did such obscene

In the novel The Scarlet Letter, the all-knowing narrator provides numerous examinations of the main character, Hester Prynne, and addresses the reader’s questions about her motivation to stay in Boston after receiving her punishment in the statement, “But there is a fatality, a feeling so irresistible and inevitable that it has the force of doom, which almost invariably compels human beings to linger around and haunt, ghost-like, the spot where some great and marked event has given the color to their lifetime; and still the more irresistibly, the darker the tinge that saddens it. Her sin, her ignominy, were the roots which she had struck into the soil. It was as if a new birth…had converted the forest-land…into Hester Prynne’s wild and dreary, but life-long home” (Hawthorne 74), which reveals Hester’s belief that through enduring the hardship of pennance she can be cleansed, a theme of the novel.…

Nataniel Hawthorne's "The Scarlett Letter" (1850), was a historical fictional book that used the informative and inspiration tones to emphasize the beauty behind the town of Cornhill, yet the darkness that surrounds it. Aside from describing the beauty, Hawthrone believes that there is light in the darkest places on Earth. Hawthorne's point of view in this story was third-person omniscient because of his knowing of all the town people and the town itself. The "bearded men intermixed with women" that were "sad-colored" show an insight of what they are experiencing. The fact that they are mixed as men and women states that perhaps they are newcomers to a new place.…

The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, was written in a time when conformity was necessary for survival, while individuality was condemned. Those who conform to society do so because they fear being different and value being accepted. Those who choose not to conform, are often punished, whether that meaning literally or socially. Those who fear differences, humiliate and ridicule those who are different and use them to scare others to stick to the social norm. It is necessary for societies to possess strong individuals even though they struggle against it.…

In itself, committing adultery is considered sin of a high degree, and Hester’s subsequent “badge of shame”, the scarlet letter, was to forever remind her of her misguided actions (98). The scarlet letter was not to celebrate adultery, but continue to punish Hester for refusing to comply with Puritan norms and engage in a sexual relationship with a man with whom she wasn’t married. Hester had the opportunity to accept the Scarlet letter as a form of punishment, but instead, she strayed from what was expected of her and “so fantastically embroidered” the scarlet letter “upon her bosom”(51). As was typical in Puritan society, anything that inspired happiness was to be considered sin and, in life, there was a general lack of color. For Hester to “fantastically” embroider a punishment upon her chest “in fine red cloth” with “flourishes of gold-thread” and apparent pride, she opposed the wishes of the Puritan church that the letter would teach her to be embarrassed by her sin (50).…
