Nathaniel Hawthorne uses his theme of man versus nature in his short story “The Birth-Mark” to show how in the end nature will always win. The short story consist of successful scientific experiments, but nature proves to be more powerful that any manmade creation. In the end the attempt to control nature with science ends only with death as well as the downfall to man. Aylmer held the job as an alchemist who strives for perfection in his wife. Aylmer represents man in the short story because of his ambition to go beyond his experiments to effect the transformations by human will (Rosenberg 146). Even though Aylmer’s love for his wife appeared to be strong, Nathaniel Hawthorne states that he possessed a degree of ultimate control (418). Aminadab can also be known as “the grunt or growl of a brute” who worked in the laboratory that can be located in Aylmer’s basement, the location also holds the furnace which explains why Aminadab always cantina the sootiness (Rosenburg 147). Aminadab sees Georgiana’s beauty but does not tell Aylmer of what will happen if he removes the birth-mark, instead at the end of the story he gives out a chuckle towards Aylmer for his plunder (Walsh 259).

He also uses this symbolism to deliver the message to the reader that perfection is not real and should not be perused, because it will eventually lead to misery. Nathaniel Hawthorne’s short story “The Birthmark” portrays this foolishly driven desire in creating a flawless being by illustrating the battle between a man’s love for science verses his love for women. Hawthorne’s choice of language conveys the barriers that lie between morality and sin that are recognized by challenging nature and scientific triumph. Early in the short story, Georgiana and her birthmark are introduced as “a single mark, deeply interwoven, as it were, with the texture and substance of her face” (Hawthorne 291). The word interwoven characterizes not only is Georgiana’s birthmark something physical but it also goes deeper into her soul, creating this imperfectly defined human being. The narrator also describes the birthmark…

This is a character, with her imperfection, is one we can all relate to as we each have our own imperfections. One quote from Hawthorne in “The Birthmark” gives a great example to how Georgiana perfectly impersonates a person that we could relate to is, “Airy figures, absolutely bodiless ideas, and forms of unsubstantial beauty came and danced before her, imprinting their momentary footsteps on beams of light. Though she had some indistinct idea of the method of these optical phenomena, still the illusion was almost perfect enough to warrant the belief that her husband possessed sway over the spiritual world" (427). This quote is when Georgiana’s mind is being conformed to the beliefs of her husband and how his opinions had power over her life. Many people come across a situation where a comment or remark transforms the way they think about a specific idea, object, or even person.…

    E. P. Whipple writes about Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter in The Atlantic Monthly stating that, “In the intellect and imagination, in the faculty of discerning spirit and detecting laws we doubt if any living novelist is [Hawthorne’s] equal; but his genius, in its creative action, has been heretofore attracted to the dark rather than the bright side of the interior life of humanity, and the geniality which evidently is in him has rarely found adequate expression.” To some this may seem like a downside to Hawthorne’s writing, however it is quintessential for the literary era of Gothic or Dark Romanticism. While Hawthorne dappled in numerous genres, he found his niche in Dark Romanticism, albeit on the less pessimistic side (Romanticism). Throughout this novel there are many literary characteristics of the Gothic Romanticism Era.…
