The reigns slice through my withered fingertips like sawing razor blades as I guide the Witch’s sleigh through the darkness of Narnia to return to her castle. In her realm of power she reclines in the sleigh and sways her wand as a reminder to abide by her commandments or be cast into stone. Narnia is silent; just the sound of the bears heaving the Witch’s sleigh through the snow, the creatures lock themselves away in the safety of their homes. A procedure I too used to follow, that is, before I betrayed the ones most dear to me and became the Witch’s evil dwarf. If only I realized my greed would leave me caught in a world of good and evil; to live in limbo and display a façade of evil.

It was the last corner before we would have reached home, when the son of Adam stumbled through the forest; how I wish our paths had not crossed. My hands became clammy and the sweat beads rolled down my wrinkled forehead as I tried to change routes before the Witch would notice the human. It was too late. She jolted from her poised position; her face fiery red with anger radiating from her body. Her evil eyes starred into mine and without a word I knew what I had to do to stay alive. I pulled the reigns and dived out of the slay, cracking my whip to hold the boy captive. I pinned him down and drew my weapon to his throat as he tossed and turned struggling to escape. He abided by her commands and responded to her questions in a desperate plea to let him go. It was then I realized, he was no ordinary child of Adam, he was a child brought to break the Witch’s prophecy. I became overwhelmed with excitement for this child had the power to restore my life to what it once was. I twiddled my thumbs anxiously as I tried to plan an escape route for Edmund to avoid the wicked schemes the Witch had connived, however, it was all too late. I looked up as the poisonous words rolled of the Witch’s tongue, “I could see you one day you becoming prince, maybe even King”. Edmunds eyes opened with excitement and he nodded his head uncontrollably as he agreed to have his family serve as their slaves. Horrified in the events unfolding, I looked the child up and down disgusted in his ease to sacrifice his family for his own greedy measures. The more I searched the child up and down, the more I realized that Edmund was a reflection of myself. He gazed into her eyes with the trust and reassurance I too had had when the White Witch convinced me to convert to a world of evil. Edmund was oblivious to the extent his greed would lead him to his self-destruction. I turned
