The Scarlet Letter is categorized as a historical drama and romance. American Romanticism focuses on several points such as symbolic undertones, supernatural influences, and good versus evil, revenge and emotion. One of the themes of Romanticism that Hawthorne focused on was good versus evil. Roger Chillingworth was a relatable character in the beginning, but he was twisted by revenge. That turned him into an evil person, who committed awful acts, to ensure his purpose was fulfilled. Roger is compared to the devil, because he made the whole town believe he was just a physician, and nothing more. For example, skin color, age, or past actions like in the book, The Scarlet Letter, where Hester Prynne committed adultery with Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale. Even though she did her time in prison, she was still forced to where a letter “A” on her bosom so everyone would know her past actions and Hester was treated so unfairly by the towns people that she was forced to take residence in a cottage outside of the town. They treated her like filth and all the children teased her and mocked her. On top of what Hester did with the Reverend, it was unfair for the townspeople to trait her the way they did, but it also unfair to Rodger Chillingworth, Hester’s husband. This shows how unfair acts can lead to consequences. After Rodger learned of what Hester did, he became vengeful against Dimmesdale and ends up slowly killing Dimmesdale. Pearl is treated unfairly too. Because she is the offspring of people who committed such an act, she has to live with her mother in cottage outside of the town. With living in away from everyone and going into town for a limited amount of time, Pearl doesn’t grow up with the rest of the children. This makes her develop attributes that the people don’t like when they are around her. Because of this, the townspeople treat her
