The Romantic period was a very influential time for the arts, literature, and intellectual thinking for the people in Europe. Many of the people who experienced this era saw it as age of enlightenment or Nirvana. During this time, there were especially many talented writers who wrote short romantic stories. Romanticized writing emphasized intense emotion as an authentic source of aesthetic experiences. One of the most famous Romantic writers of the time was Nathaniel Hawthorne. Hawthorne was an American novelist who specialized in dark romantic writing such as the “Birth-Mark.” In the “Birth-Mark,” Hawthorne uses a character named Aylmer to symbolize how man cannot be god. For some people who do not know what GMOs are, they are living organisms whose genetic material has been artificially manipulated in a laboratory by scientists. Even though there are many pros about GMO’s such as curing incurable diseases or preventing bad traits to pass along the generation of a family, they are still inevitably used to modify Gods creation which is sacrilege. Hawthorne tries to show readers that no one is perfect and that trying to act like God and create someone who is perfect is impossible. Aylmer too arrogant to notice this morale still continued his experiment. On the day of the experiment Aylmer prepared many concoctions and agents to cure Georgianna of the mark shaped crimson hand. But as the experiment was conducted many of the prepared cures had no effect on Georgianna. This is because nature cannot be changed that easily by man. Think of the nature of a person like the personality of a person. Can you change someone’s personality? No, because it belongs to them it is their unique characteristic of themselves. Same thing with nature in this situation if you apply the same concept with personality it works the same
