In 1813, he suffered from an athletic injury and was immobile for many months and was unable to attend school. Being home for so many months, let him bond with his sisters and mother which caused them to become closer. This also allowed for much more time to spend with his nose in a book. His small family, which included his mother, his two sisters, and himself, moved to Raymond, Maine for a short time by 1818.
