Nathan Vanhoy Character Analysis

Nathan Vanhoy at first glance appeared to be an average boy however Nathan struggle with reading. His parents were surprised because of the amount of reading he did at home. So they thought. His school thought it would be best if he were to repeat the first grade a second time, but when he started the second grade he starting having the same problems again. Again Nathan struggled with his reading, it wasn’t until his parents realized that he was memorizing the book, that he really had a learning problem. I think that Nathans parents were in denial that their son had a learning disability. I think parents fear the idea, because most see their children as extra special. But his mother realized he had a problem around the second grade. His teachers didn’t see that he had a learning problem more of a behavioral problem. His 5th grade test scores showed that he was average, but he struggled with basic reading and writing. It wasn’t until 7th grade that school officials realized that Adam had a learning problem. Because of his age traditional options wasn’t available and alternatives didn’t help earthier. As a result Adam digressed stopped going to school, self-esteem goes down and started using drugs, alcohol and even theft. Again School officials attempted to help by placing Adam in special education class, but because they are so broad he is still not getting the help he needs. Eventually Adam is kicked out of school altogether. The system has failed Adam along with his parents. I think that if Adams mother realized there was something wrong with her child early on, then she should not have taken no for an answer. If there was a problem then she should have sought help somewhere else or did something better than just going with the flow. What future does he have now? he’s back on drugs and abusing alcohol, taking odd jobs to make money. Everyone failed Adam. I fought the system and his parents, because parents are the advocates for their children and when you know something is wrong, you’re supposed to fight for your
