“A Wonder book” Nathan Hawthorn’s children story A Wonder Book is based on the story of Pandora’s box, but it also seems like it is similar to classic bible story of Adam and Eve. This book treats naughtiness in a good and bad way, a perfect mixture of both. Primrose, one of many siblings, is the self proclaimed “naughty one”. She is a gossiper and her older cousin wants to tell each child a story about someone who is just as naughty as Primrose. Cousin Eustace beings the tale by stating “...and be all as still as so many mice. At the slightest interruption, whether from great, naughty Primrose, little dandelion or any other…” The irony in this line is that the words “the great” comes before Eustace saying Primrose is naughty. Even though Pandora actually lifted the lid to let the troubles loose Epimetheus should also be blamed. The tory states “So whenever we blame Pandora for what happened we must not forget to shake our heads at Epimetheus likewise.” Pandora and Epimetheus both suffered for deceiving the orders they were given. Similarly, in the story of Adam and eve eating the apple lead to humans having the capability to sin, Pandora released the troubles that tormented small people. Even already causing much pain to the world Pandora and her friend lifted the box again releasing Hope. Epimetheus states that “Pandora has done so much mischief already, that perhaps toy may as well do a little more” Basically he is saying that since she is already naughty why should she not be naughty again? Is she being glorified for being bad and not being punished for her disobedience? When Hope was realized all their pain was gone and she was actually rewarded for her opening the forbidden box.
