8 May 2017 Nathan Bedford Forrest Nathan Bedford Forrest was a very complex man. Forrest grew up in Tennessee with his mom and dad, Mariam Beck Forrest, and William Forret. He has accomplished many things and has had many achievements in his life span. Forest even had a memorial dedicated to him in Memphis, Tennessee. Nathan Forrest was born on July 13, 1821. Surprisingly, Nathan grew up with 11 other siblings, but he and his twin sister were the oldest. When his father died in 1841, Nathan had to step and be the man of the house. Later on, he married Mary Ann Montgomery and had two kids. “In 1852 he moved his young family to Memphis, Tennessee, where he amassed a small fortune working as a slave trader.” He made his fortune in slave trading. Nathan eventually joined in the Civil war. “Following the start of the Civil War (1861-65), Forrest enlisted as a private in the Tennessee Mounted Rifles and helped equip the unit using his own money.” Forrest soon became a lieutenant colonel and was placed in charge of raising and training his own battalion of 650 mounted troopers. Nathan was called the Wizard of the Saddle. “Known as the “Wizard of the Saddle” for his ingenious use of cavalry forces during the Civil War, Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest rose from the rank of private to lieutenant general despite having no previous military training.” Not only was he the Wizard of the Saddle, but he was also the Grand Wizard of the Klu Klux Klan or the KKK.
