All of the frontier men, some British men, and some Native Americans respect Nathanial because he always tries to do the right thing. He is a man that does what is best for everyone else and not necessarily for himself. For example, he left Cora and everyone else under the waterfall because he assumed if he stayed there would have been a fight. If Nathanial and his friends left, then Cora, Alice, and Heyward would have a better chance of getting taken hostage and not killed. The frontier men also made an agreement with the British men that if their homes were attacked in any way, they could return to their homes and defend that homes and families. However, the British reneged on their promise because Heyward lied about what he saw and said that Nathanial was making it all up. Nathanial helped the frontier men escape Fort Henry even though the British said anyone who left would be shot or hung. Despite the consequences, Nathanial helped them escape anyway because he felt it was the honorable thing to do. In addition to, Nathanial proved his honor by saving Cora and Alice even though he did not know them. Danger, risks and fear do not stop him from helping
