A full day in Grand Rapids, on 10 October 2015 with my 2 best friends, we loaded into my car to embark on a world wind day to experience all the luxuries Grand Rapids had to offer us. With the assignment rubric folded in my pocket and a pen, all of us had seen pieces of art that made us question, discuss, and analyze. Starting in Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum one artist was very blatant about not hiding his symbolism inspired by old world paintings, particularly the renaissance era. Randy Van Duinen used oil paints to depict a scene called “Redemption”, and at first glance you see a sorrowful angel beginning for mercy from the heavens but at closer inspection you see relief in the angel’s face as lighter colors around him show a beam of light or hope. I liked the shading the artist uses to give a sign of darkness but the beam of light around what looks like the repentant angel.

Moving around Grand Rapids rather in the car or on foot, we all enjoyed the company, artists, and delicatessen. Arriving at Boardwalk GR Condominiums we see two note worthy art mediums, one artistic piece was painted with earth tone acrylics called “Space between Mother and Child” by Nataliya Yutanova. The piece called “Bulldog Tutu” by Jeane TerHaar, I just thought this one was definitely silly, and having pets I dressed mine up at times and they definitely are not okay with being in clothes. Also the facial of the bulldog definitely makes the viewer have compassion for the animal. Reflecting on the piece bulldogs, as was Socrates, are viewed as visually unappealing creatures but both maintain a sense of dignity and grace in humiliating circumstances. Attitude is showed through in the painting and in the reading of the literary piece “The Apology” by Plato depicting the show of this publically undignified

Intertextuality, a reference to literary text in a novel used to convey a theme, is an important element to include in films which display changing in values in a society. This element is especially prevalent in Gary Ross’s 1998 postmodernist film ‘Pleasantville’. The audience is shown Pleasantville’s change in values through Ross’ use of allusions to novels; in particular Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, art works, like those of Pablo Picasso, and 1950’s sitcoms, Father Knows Best.…

Significant personal events in one’s life can act to influence an individual’s artmaking practice. This is evident through Frida Kahlo’s artwork ‘The Broken Column’ 1944, Jenny Sages ‘After Jack’ 2012 and Christian Thompson ‘King Billy’ 2010. Frida Kahlo, is the first example of such an individual as she experienced a horrible accident causing permanent damage to her spine. As a result of the accident, Kahlo became influenced to paint through using her emotion as a driving force to paint where Kahlo states “I am broken, but I am happy as long as I can paint”. This is depicted in Kahlo’s artwork ‘The Broken Column’ in plate 4 which depicts a figure namely Kahlo herself being pricked by nails with the presence of a broken pillar.…

When looking at both Ringgold's God Bless America and Shirin Neshat's Rebellious Silence, the viewer can deliberately feel the tone the artworks set because of the color and the unity.…

The expression of art in all of its visual forms is produced to be appreciated and invoke an emotional response towards the viewers that consume it. The Philbrook located here in Tulsa, Oklahoma features various works from the European Middle Ages that succeed in accomplishing such a feat. Particularly, The Coronation of the Virgin, an Italian painting by Andrea di Cione, dated back to circa 1375 left me enthralled when visiting the museum (1). The material is composed of egg tempera on a linden wood panel that showcases the beauty of the pigments, rather than distract from it, due to artists paint choice (2). Despite the decades that have passed since the conception of the painting, the colors are still striking, especially the gold tint that surrounds each subject.…
