Natalie Griffin's Argumentative Essay

Natalie Griffin is now a speech language pathologist, who works in the school, she attended while growing up. Her decision to become a speech pathologist was not an easy one. She grew up with a stuttering problem herself and was in speech therapy throughout school. She would be in therapy and then things would improve drastically, to the point she no longer qualified for therapy. In her case this actually hurt her rather than helped. As time progressed her stuttering problem would return and the children in her classes would pick on her asking why she talked “weird” (Griffin, 2017). This is slightly different in the class discussions because in other videos children are aware of their stuttering problems and they want everyone to know about it. So an important question to consider is, as SLP’s should we go into the child’s classrooms and tell the children of their disorder, so they are aware of it or let them find out on their on? …show more content…
This class is what made her decide she wanted to be a speech language pathologist. Her professor gave a lecture on stuttering and even admitted that he struggles with stuttering. This was the first time Natalie had ever met another person who stuttered, let alone, a professor who stuttered. He encouraged her to begin therapy with the Portland State’s clinic where the students made her step out of her comfort zone and come to terms with her stuttering problem. After getting her degree her clinical fellowship year was at her old school where she worked under her SLP that she had in grade
