Nat Turner, who was the African American that led one of the bloodiest and most effective rebellion in American history was born on October 2, 1800 at the plantation of a slave master named Benjamin Turner which was in Southampton county Virginia. He was 30 years old when his rebellion took place which was on August 22, 1831. While he was still very young his family believed he surely would be a prophet and that he had a great purpose in life (Barnes 2). He was deeply spiritual and spent most of his youthful years praying and fasting. Nat Turner rebellion was renowned as one of the bloodiest rebellion in the history of America through the causes, the effect, and the outcome of his rebellion.
The chief causes of Nat Turners rebellions were his belief and the signs in which he received. “Turner was deeply committed to his Christian faith and believed he received messages from God through visions and signs in nature” (Larson 1). Nat Turners believe of being born for a greater purpose in life and the signs which confirmed this believe were the factor which drove him to this historical massacre of the white southerners. The consequence of his rebellion acts is still being discussed today. The immediate consequence of his revolt was the tightening of security all over the south. Jennifer Larson acknowledged how many southern states, including North Carolina, tightened restrictions of African American in the immediate aftermath of the rebellion. (Larson 1). Huge security was imposed in southern states in order to prevent any future rebellions. A somewhat positive outcome in the aftermath of Nat turner’s rebellion was the release of some imprisoned slaves. “The wrath of slaveholders was somewhat appeased by the capture of Nat turner, the Imprisoned were released”. (Jacob 57). Slave master felt a little bit of relieving and released those who were in
