Virtually everyone who works in a scientific field will ultimately have to deal, in one way or another, with the production of healthy clean water and the key concepts to cooking food correctly. The importance of keeping our drinking water clean is not stressed enough. There are distributions of harmful components that are put into our waters on a day to day basis (and the distribution that we speak of is nasty pathogens that are commonly found in human/animal bodily waste).The majority of the clean waters in Virginia is by the help of HRSD (Hampton Roads Sanitation District). HRSD is known for their different projects and successful efforts in working with the sanitation and cleaning of water throughout VA. They essentially take all of the …show more content…
Normally, the pathogens that are seen the most are G.vermiculophylla, V. cholera, V.vulnificus (very common), V.parahaemolyticus(very common). The G.vermiculophylla was introduced to the estuaries worldwide. They are resistant to environmental stressors, and is said to have gotten here by transportation of ships or boat propellers. In the year of 2009, a widespread survey was conducted and it was found that 39 each were found in the 20 sightings that the HRSD scientists tested. Gracilara is the dominant genus that was found in these sighting. There was about 98% of the samples that were found at the sighting were G.vermiculophylla. G. vermiculophylla is a reservoir for pathogenic species of the vibrio bacteria. Virginia over the past decades numbers has doubled when dealing with how many infections are happening due to the consumption of water. vulnificus is found in warm waters that are in the coastal areas during the summer time, for example the ocean front that is located in Virginia Beach. This particular pathogen is in the oyster. The reason why it is found in the oyster is because the oysters typically feed by filtering the invested water throughout their body system, which then allows this disgusting pathogen to live and stay in their bodily tissues. So when one digests the oyster raw or undercooked, they are now subjective to the pathogen entering their body and infecting them. This infection will again lead to illness and possibly death.
The HRSD vision is to be able to provide future generations with clean waterways and have an effective way to keep them clean. They have created a pathogen program. This program has 2 sessions of molecular laboratory and field components. Their focus is microbial science tracking studies. Microbial science tracking studies involve a set of techniques that are used to determine the sources of fecal indicator bacteria in the environment.
