The North American Society for Sport Managers, NASSM, held its first official conference on December 16, 1985. The purpose of the North American Society for Sport Managers is to promote, stimulate, and encourage research, scholarly writing, and professional development in the area of sport management (“Purpose and History,” n.d.). Essentially, NASSM, is a sport management organization that seeks to promote scholarship and the academic advancement of sport management. The mission of the NASSM is to support other organizations that have similar purposes, organize and schedule meetings that promote their purpose, and develop literature, such as the Journal of Sport Management (“Purpose and History,” n.d.). The scope of this specific organization is largely academic and research driven. The goal of the NASSM is to equip sport managers with information that is relevant and scholarly. The Sport Marketing Association was founded in 2002, and it strives to develop and expand the body of knowledge in sport marketing by providing forums for professional interaction among practitioners, academics, and students dedicated to the sport marketing industry (“What We Do,” n.d.). The International Association of Venue Managers appeals to me more than the other previously mentioned organizations because it is more focused on the management and business side of sport management. I love sports, but I love the management aspect of sport management more than I do the sport aspect. The IAVM is more about those who host the events than the actual sporting events. I love the idea of networks, and I think that it is genius that one of the main purposes of this organization is to connect people. It would be a special experience for me to witness what happens on the inside of the International Association of Venue
