My first memory at North Carolina Governor’s School West is of crying next to my parents on a bench under a giant tree. It was move-in day for the five-and-a-half-week session, and I was already sure that they would be the worst weeks of my life. I was terrified; I knew no one except two students from my high school, who were rising juniors and to whom I had never spoken before. After that stressful first day, I fell asleep unsure of how I could make it on my own in a place filled with such talented, intelligent, and unfamiliar people. A week later, I knew that Governor’s School would be one of the most treasured experiences of my entire life.…

His natural, easy rapport with students combined with his unrivaled knowledge of his subject area (He was the lead mechanic for this school district for ten years, maintain 501’s fleet of vehicles!)-make him a standout in the classroom as an educator. What makes him distinguished, however, is his constant quest to improve himself as a professional. Not a day goes by that Tim doesn't stop by my room (To be fair, he is next door to me!)…

Having gone to two different high schools I got to experience, firsthand, just how different two schools in the same county can be. Marvin ridge and Weddington High School are completely different in their appearance, their students and their academics. Marvin was the first high school that I attended. Its nickname was " Marvin Rich". The Ridge had a certain feeling to it when you stepped foot in its doors, almost as if the air was filled with exhaust from pricey cars and cologne from name brand stores.…

honors classes to them just because they assume they will not be capable to handle them. There is not a motivation to encourage them to take highly demanding courses, and since they are new in the system, they are unable to complain for something different. In addition, even if they complain, they are excluded from the option of taking a harder class because of the English level they can handle. The argument is unfair for those who excel in mathematical and scientific ability but lack of English proficiency.…

Over the past four Christmases I worked with other teens who share the same feeling of responsibility to helping underprivileged students. These students were 9 years old and had to learn in overcrowded classroom on empty stomachs when learning can be a struggle in of itself. However, it does not have to be that way. Many of the children just needed further individual support and care, to give them the motivation needed to reach their full potential.
