I have the chance to become the first student astronaut to explore another planet. 1-3 in 600 people a year become an astronaut through NASA in the US. I have been asked if I would accept the task of being the first student astronaut to explore another planet. I will not accept this task. There are three reasons why I will not accept this task; I am not confident in piloting a space ship, space is a spooky place, and space can cause bone loss.

Every month an astronaut spends in space they lose approximately 1 percent of their bone mass. This happens because, while in space, there is no gravity. With no gravity astronauts float around from section to section in their space ships; because of this the body starts treating the calcium in the lower limbs, like the legs, like an extra build up. The body will break down the unnecessary calcium and distribute it elsewhere in the body. This redistribution the bones become weaker leading to a brittleness that will affect astronauts when they return into the Earth 's gravity. The bones aren 't the only thing that is affected by zero gravity. Muscles, fluid shifts, the cardiovascular system, and the balance are all also affected by a zero gravity atmosphere. Astronauts are not immune to harm in space and space can cause all manner of dangerous things to occur. Some of the conditions that are caused in space can be treated until the astronaut affected is no longer ill but some conditions cannot be cured or take more than a lifetime to heal.
