I have the chance to become the first student astronaut to explore another planet. 1-3 in 600 people a year become an astronaut through NASA in the US. I have been asked if I would accept the task of being the first student astronaut to explore another planet. I will not accept this task. There are three reasons why I will not accept this task; I am not confident in piloting a space ship, space is a spooky place, and space can cause bone loss.
The first reason why I will not accept this task is that I am not confident piloting a space ship. I have never wanted to become an astronaut. Studying to become an astronaut requires more than high school. NASA asks that candidates have at least three years of professional experience or at least 1,000 hours of pilot time in the military. There are not, however, any specifically required courses a candidate must have before becoming an astronaut. Not only am I not confident in piloting a space ship or meet the candidate requirements; I would not know what to do if the ship should become damaged. I am not a mechanic. The only thing I know how to properly fix is a light bulb when it goes out. There are also lots of buttons in a space ship. Unlike cars, space ships have a large number of different software and hardware. Easily there is more than 1,000 different switches inside a space ship. I can hardly memorize the buttons on my keyboard.
