Narwhals are part of the phylum Chordate and class Mammalia. They belong to the order Artiodactyla or even-toed ungulates which means they bare their weight on the third and fourth toe and the infraorder Cetacean which includes whales. Their family, Monodontidae, only includes Narwhals and Beluga whales. They are part of a one species genus called Monodon and their scientific name in Monodon Monoceros.
Narwhals inhabit the cold deep waters of the Arctic Circle, mostly found in North Eastern Canada, Greenland and the Barents Sea. Baffin Bay contains about half the total species population and the Hudson Strait contains a declining population. Occasionally they will ascend rivers. Narwhals depend on ice to make breathing holes, therefor they migrate according to ice formations and melting patterns. During the spring Narwhals will penetrate receding pack-ice and in the winter they inhabit deep-water off shore. Narwhals are predators who consume pelagic fish, squid, shrimp and various bottom dwellers on the seabed.

Three threats surround narwhals, Inuit hunters, their ivory tusks and climate change. The Inuit are the indigenous people of the arctic regions, narwhals are hunted by them and used as subsistence food. Regulations have been placed on hunting narwhals were the whole body must be used and some countries even completely prohibit hunting of narwhals for any reason. Their tusk, like that of the rhinos and elephants are made of ivory. Since the 1970s the price of ivory has increased and it continues to rise today. The big issue that is not only affecting them is climate change. Climate fluctuations and temperature changes have limited their habitat range. These climate changes cause ice to form fast which in turn traps narwhals and prevents them from creating a breathing

N-V Cougar Practice It was just another regular day to practice for the Niobrara-Verdigre Cougars at Niobrara. All of the Verdigre football players despised going over to Niobrara for practice. It was the usual ride over there with all of us talking about how school went that day, about football, or about other topics in the news. We would turn up the radio if a song came on that most of us could sing since we knew the song. It would seem sometimes that it seemed we were on the way to choir practice not football practice.…

Thanks to its isolation, the Arctic wolf is not threatened by hunting and habitat destruction in the same way as its southern relatives. Arctic wolves are carnivorous hunters. Native species are species that have evolved to in a particular region over a long period of time, and have adapted to live in that region’s climate and habitat. Invasive species are a type of non native species, that are very likely to cause harm to the ecosystem (NOAA). Despite the small number of Inuit population in ratio to other minorities in Canada, the Arctic needs to be under protection of Canada to prevent other Nations from mismanaging and neglecting the Inuit people. Due to the lack of use of the Canadian Arctic, the Inuit were displaced to the treacherous areas of the Arctic. To prevent this, Canada needs to continue to be active in the north by fighting for sovereignty in order to continue to protect the Inuit…

First, their food is quite different from that of the Iroquois and the Sioux. Their common food includes seals, walruses, Beluga Whales, narwhals, caribou, Musk Oxen, Arctic Fox, Polar Bear, Arctic Hare, and arctic birds. They have a different variety of these foods because they live in a different and colder environment that produces the different foods. Secondly, their techniques for hunting and their tools are disparate. When they are fishing, the Inuit attached sealskin floats to harpoon heads (with lines), which keeps the animal close to the surface after being killed.…

A collapsed dorsal fin is a sign that something is wrong with the killer whale because in nature this does not occur. Many believe that killer whales in captivity receive exceptional veterinary care that helps them live a prolonged and healthy life. These animals are given daily a reliable food source and are not faced with the predators that they could potentially encounter in the open ocean. Though this is a valid point, orcas pose various adaptations which has helped them survive for so long in the marine environment. These adaptations are what makes them the apex predator of the ocean.…

1 Dec. 2015. The scholarly article, “Polar Bears in a Warming Climate,” uses the scenarios predicted by climate change models to explore the progressing sea ice changes in the Artic and assess the changes that will lead to dramatic shifts in trophic interactions between polar bears and their main pray: seals. The article argues that all polar bears show behavioral plasticity but given the rapid pace of ecological change in the Arctic, the long generation time, and the highly specialized nature of polar bears, it is unlikely that polar bears will survive…

Many species in the world are endangered and eventually becoming extinct. The main problem that generates extinction is human activity; people cause extinction every day and unknowingly to them, it is killing innocent animals. Due to pollution, natural forces, human interaction, and loss of habitats, animal extinction is a major crisis in the world; people are the only ones that can save the animal population before it is too late. Pollution is among the most insidious threats to animal extinction. It can be as obvious as sewage and oil spills in water or as invisible as chemicals used every day.…
