Christina is an 8-year-old child who is being adopted by her cousins. Christina’s mother died from a drug overdose. Her mother was physically abusive, neglectful, emotionally abusive and Christina suffers from other trauma yet to be discovered. Christian spent several years in the foster care system and had five different placements. Since moving in with the Martinez family she has started showing several behavioral problems she is acting out, and avoiding any physical contact she is also being verbally aggressive towards tommy and refuses to share mealtimes with the family. Christina’s past evaluations who significant attachment dysfunction possible reactive attachment disorder and post traumatic stress disorder.
Presenting Issue
Christina is being brought in because she is having explosive acting out behaviors she is avoiding physical contact and is being verbally abusive towards Tommy. The family wants to give her a stable home yet they are at the end of their rope and do not know what else to do with Christina. With children it is a little different children respond more to play therapy so in order to use a narrative approach we would use a narrative stem. In the Article by Farnfield “Narrative stems are a doll-play procedure in which, using a few simple props, the interviewer gives the child the beginning of a story about a child or animal, which may or may not represent the child, and then asks him/her “to show me and tell me what happens next” (Farnfiled, 2016). I believe this approach would work because Christina is still young enough to want to play and I the goal is for Christina to use her past to tell her story, and so we can find out why she is not wanting to be
