Insidious 3 Narrative Structure

The film chosen is “Insidious 3”, a film that many of us have watch. Directed and written by Leigh Whannell. This film develops a linear narrative structure where the director tries to implement two completely different emotions to the viewer with Suspense. The anxiety brought on by a partial uncertainty as every typical horror creates “fear”. Also, the feeling of a young girl missing and trying to reach her mother who is dead. As the movie starts, the viewer probably already know what to expect, horror movies usually follow the same patterns. About twenty minutes after the film started, the “Exposition point”, the event or situation that sets the rest of the narrative in motion could be seen. And then, the father trying to get some help from the old lady to take his daughter out of this issue, are all events that push all the story to its climax. The old lady cannot help the teenager. If she tries to do it, there is a big chance to her being killed by another spirit, therefore the father tries to find another way to help his daughter. By the way, while this happens, the old lady is morally strengthened by one of her old friends, bringing the film to the turning point (Climax). The old lady goes in rescue of the young girl who was about to being murder by the spirit after being possessed. The Falling action, events that follow the climax and bring the narrative from climax to conclusion. The old lady has overcome her fear and fights against the spirits that do not let her or let the young girl live in peace. Evidently, here is the point where the film reach the Denouement or in other words the conclusion. They are free, they are not attached to any paranormal entity, and now they can have a “normal” life, at least that is what the director makes the viewer think, until the very last second where a simple event leaves the story open to a new future …show more content…
For instance, at the beginning of the film we can see an example of a Match-on-Action Cut, as the young lady approaches to the door there is a switch of perspective, it shows the continuation of the character. In addition, right after this cut, it is possible to appreciate a 180-degree system, looking at the back of the young girl at the lower left corner, and facing the old lady who opened the door. The old lady starts talking and when the young lady responds the cut switches to show the back of the old lady at the lower right corner, and facing the young girl, making the screen direction consistent. A shot/reverse shot, one of the most common, is shown after three minutes of the film, during the same conversation between the young girl and the old lady. It shows the face of who is talking, and then switches to the one who responds. About six minutes later, in a different scene where the young girl has to take her brother to school, the viewer can witness of how a jump cut works. We observe how she leaves the house with her brother, then after a fade out, it jumps to later on in the afternoon when she runs to her audition. The editor or the director do not waste time with unimportant events or actions in the film, it makes a jump in time, there is not continuity.
