Emmi and her friend Sophia were going to a corn maze with a group of friends. Emmi had never been to a corn maze before, but she knew how to look at a maze and find the way out. So she thought that it would be super easy.
“ I can not wait to see Greg,” Sophia said. Greg was Sophia’s crush, and secretively Emmis too. “ No, Emmi you are a great singer,” Greg said.
Emmi was shocked. She thought that everyone was laughing at her, but she was wrong. They all seemed to think it was cool. Emmi felt a lot better after knowing this and continued to walk to the entrance of the maze.
An instructor introduced them and he explained to the teams many rules. After the long lecture he finally asked for a volunteer to pass gear out to the teams. Emmi quickly raised her hand, eager to be in charge. She was escorted behind a table and was showed a bin of unorganized flashlights and maps. The instructor then told her to hand each of the teams a few of each. After Emmi handed the two teams their items, it was time to start. Everyone started to run and soon the two teams were nowhere near each other.
“ I guess this means we are winning,” Greg said.
“ Oh trust me, they are far behind,” Emmi

Another major theme that explicitly presents itself is the theme of sacrifice. The presence of the characters showing their willingness to sacrifice is shown throughout the novel.
