Narrative Poems: Unrequited Love, And Modern Day Ballads

Improved Essays
Ballads are narrative poems that are meant to be sung. Traditionally, ballads follow common characteristic and themes that identify them as ballads. Some themes found in ballads are unrequited love, heroic deeds, and humorous arguments. These themes differ from one another, showcasing that ballads are very diverse but can be identified. Alternatively, common characteristics found in traditional ballads are the rhythmic schemes, repetition, and narrative. Modern-day ballads still follow these themes and characteristics. Also, modern day ballads are mostly sung rather than being told in a story-like form. In this Essay, I will be arguing that “Demons,” by Imagine Dragons, contains elements of a ballad.

Which is, a man who wants to protect and be with his love, but he has a dark battle with himself. When he says “I wanna hide the truth,” and then retracts with “there’s nowhere we can hide” it shows the uncertainty of, if he should be with his love or not. Meaning, he wants to protect this girl from the negativity and dark side of the world, but he can not, his dark side holds so much power over him. In the song, he says, “don't wanna let you down, but I am hell bound,” which in my view means, he wants to do everything for this girl to be happy, but he knows that he can not change and his future is not a good one. In this story, the character is dealing with challenges in life and love. The character wants to be with this girl, but his inner demons will not let him be with her. Overall, the story tells a tale about a man whose only happiness is a girl, who he believes deserve better than …show more content…
Specifically, the tale about a boy who does not believe he deserves the girl he loves. This song speaks about a message, that most people go through. That is, you have to be truly happy with yourself before you can fully commit to one person. As well as, knowing that the person you are in love with, deserve better than you. Furthermore, modern day ballads are used today in rap and pop songs. Now they are fast paced and used to relate to a younger population. Initially, ballads were associated with cowboys, outlaws, folk heroes, and mountain people. Yet, now you tend to see more ballads associated with love

The title of the novel The Catcher in the Rye is based upon Holden’s mishearing of the poem Comin’ thro’ the Rye by Robert Burns. Holden’s misconception leads him to believe that the line “If a body meet a body comin’ thro’ the rye” is really “If a body catch a body comin’ thro’ the rye” which changes how he perceives its meaning. With his improper understanding of the poem, Holden believes it is about trying to stop children from growing older, which is quite different from its actual theme. His interpretation of the poem becomes clear when he states, “Thousand of little kids, and nobody’s around… I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff-” (173, Salinger). The cliff that Holden is trying to stop the children from falling…

Songs are poems set to music. They come in all different varieties, genres and styles but often the message conveyed is similar. In modern music the message or theme usually relates to love or substance abuse. A few decades ago, the messages were comparable, and even though society was quite different then, the themes in music were relatively the same. Two such examples are “Come a Little Bit Closer” by Jay and the Americans and “A Woman Needs Love” by Ray Parker Jr. Both of these songs share a common idea of women cheating.…

In the end, they ask too much - she is only human and there's only so much she can handle before she breaks. Author used words such as “on and on”(line 11) to demonstrate the deepness and the intensiveness of the young man’s desire toward the woman. An image of the young man alone in the bed, “tossed from one side to another”(line 2) showed how much he suffered from loving the woman he was unable to get. This stanza conveyed sorrows and pains the man went through when the maiden he thought of day and night rejected him, and this created in a sad tone in contrast to the happy and exciting tone before. Nonetheless, starting from the fourth stanza, the tone seemed to move back toward the happy side of the scale. In line 16, “With harps we bring her company”, the young man shortened the distance between him and the maiden through playing harps.…
