There was a hypocrisy of religion during this time during American slavery. In the eyes of God everybody is equal, but the slaveholders told the slaves they still have to obey them. While the slaves were starving the slaveholders prayed for more food even though they already had enough. In a way the slaveholders used religion as way to control the slaves. If God said it then it must be true.
Enslaved people used religion to relieve them of all their worries. Like Frederick Douglass religion gave the slaves a sense of hope. Since their lives were terrible the slaves preceded dying as a blessing. “His death was regarded by the slaves as the result of a merciful providence”(Douglass 7). At the time dying was leading them to freedom in the afterlife. Where they were free from slavery.To the slaves religion is viewed positive either way.
In conclusion, in the Narrative of Frederick Douglass religion for the most part is viewed in a positive light. There are a few negatives like the hypocrisy, twisting God’s words, and lying. Still today some people view dying as a way to be with God. Like how the slaves perceive dying. And even now there are some people lie about certain things about their religion. But today in society there a lot of mixed of mixed feelings about religion. If God really exists or is it just all make
