My mom had only told me little things about her college experiences, just a few stories here and there, the occasional frantic phone calls to her mom, and some about the friends she made. So when I decided to sit down and interview her, I was generally curious on what she would tell me. I had been contemplating the questions I would ask her while I was waiting for her to get home from work. After she had gotten home and I was satisfied with my list, I sat down and started the interview. My mom was in her usual school attire and her blonde, short hair was straightened. My mom told me that before she decided to become a teacher, she wanted to major in Speech Pathology and Audiology, she said, "CALU was one of the best." She admitted that she really enjoyed her time there, even though she missed her family. With saying she missed them, she joked and said they clearly didn't miss her, when she came back to her parent's house, they were renting her room!. Still, my mom is very family-oriented and believes in putting family first. After laughing with her, I next asked what her college experience was like, she laughed a little at this saying, "It was like um... growing up, I guess, gaining responsibilities, it was hard work." With her starting to speak of her academics, I led with my next question, how college work is different then high school work. I learn that the work was far more independent, and for my mom, it was a change of view, and a way to take things more seriously. Reaching the end of my list, I asked my mom to name one event that she would say, more or less, changed her. I could see that her mood had slightly shifted and that she was clearly remembering something, she told me, "The Desert Storm War, a lot of my friends got deployed."
