Narrative Interview

My mom had only told me little things about her college experiences, just a few stories here and there, the occasional frantic phone calls to her mom, and some about the friends she made. So when I decided to sit down and interview her, I was generally curious on what she would tell me. I had been contemplating the questions I would ask her while I was waiting for her to get home from work. After she had gotten home and I was satisfied with my list, I sat down and started the interview. My mom was in her usual school attire and her blonde, short hair was straightened. Per usual, my mom was reluctant to answer anything, but I eventually got her to spill. I started off simple with, "Why'd you choose the college you attended?"

My mom told me that before she decided to become a teacher, she wanted to major in Speech Pathology and Audiology, she said, "CALU was one of the best." She admitted that she really enjoyed her time there, even though she missed her family. With saying she missed them, she joked and said they clearly didn't miss her, when she came back to her parent's house, they were renting her room!. Still, my mom is very family-oriented and believes in putting family first. After laughing with her, I next asked what her college experience was like, she laughed a little at this saying, "It was like um... growing up, I guess, gaining responsibilities, it was hard work." With her starting to speak of her academics, I led with my next question, how college work is different then high school work. I learn that the work was far more independent, and for my mom, it was a change of view, and a way to take things more seriously. Reaching the end of my list, I asked my mom to name one event that she would say, more or less, changed her. I could see that her mood had slightly shifted and that she was clearly remembering something, she told me, "The Desert Storm War, a lot of my friends got deployed." She went on to say that she never believed she would see anything like

I always believed that interviews were only connected with the attempt to gain a position. Never have I heard of an interview taking place for any other reason. However, after completing my first informational interview, I learned there is much more to gain: connections, knowledge, and perspective. I was able to conduct my informational interview with Matt Smith, Lead Tax Services Director at Deloitte in Grand Rapids, Michigan. In reference to “Informational Interview” created by Eric Brown, my bridge person, Smith’s daughter, assisted me in making the connection to Smith.…

As I mentioned in the previous assignment, I want to increase my baseline 500 steps each week so that by the end of the semester I am recording 10,000 steps which is in the active range. I will continue walking around the property at work and stepping in place whenever I possibly can. I will stick to walking to the mailbox which is two blocks from home as opposed to driving up to it on my way home. If I have days where I am tired I will just give myself another pep talk. I have a pretty good support system thus far so I will lean on them if pushing myself on my own does not cut it.…

I hate it when I have prepared, a carefully crafted soliloquy, a sentiment of pure splendor, a plethora of plentiful thought, and my script is discard within seconds because the conversation takes a detour. Conversations are inimitable and completely wild. They roam from topic to topic without a glance at the well written thoughts I have so tedious prepare the night before. When I reach a place to interject a bit of my rehearsed dialogue, it comes unnatural and the conversation withers within seconds. This only contributes to the fascination and passion I have for writing.…

‘Just one hour of this and you can go back to sleep’ was the phrase I groggily repeated to myself as I got ready to register for my freshman year of high school. Had I known that the mountain of paperwork I was about to fill out that late July morning would ultimately lead to me finding my passion, I would have definitely been a lot more enthusiastic. I traded all my information for my schedule, only to realize that there was one slight problem: P.E. was on my list of courses for the year. Physical education? I sought out my counselor immediately to fix this quandary.…

My hopes of coming here was not to learn more about my passions or gain the “college experience” but, I wanted to expand my knowledge. When I was a child it seemed that I was always behind everyone else my age.…

I was just really nervous. I don’t exactly know what my mom’s view on college is. She was a bit confusing. Her being from Mexico and not attending school past elementary school, she has always just been a hard worker at factory type jobs. She would always tell me to work hard and study hard so that I wouldn’t end up like her, without an education and working at minimum wage jobs.…

I found the light in the interrogation room to be simultaneously too dim and annoyingly bright. The burns, scrapes, and bruises that covered me, made every move a painful one, but I wasn’t about to tell either detective that. PROCESS OF THERAPY Beels identifies three stages of narrative therapy. First, through listening to the story of the problem, it is recast as an affliction of the client. To do this, the therapist and client concentrate on the effects rather than the causes of the problem. These efforts help in the process of externalizing the problem. Next, alternatives to the problem are explored, and an alternate story is created through focusing on unique outcomes or times when the problem was not manifest.…
