In the exposition, the narrator - Nick Carraway has returned from World War 1 and is renting a home in the West Egg of Long Island - a small, but fancy town. His cousin, Daisy and her husband Tom live across the bay in the very posh East Egg of the city. Jay Gatsby who is Nick’s wealthy neighbor is known to throw lavish parties attended by hundreds of guests, filled with high quality entertainment and alcohol (illegal). On another occasion, Tom invited Nick to a party in New York City during which he interacted with Tom’s mistress, Myrtle Wilson. However, at the party, Myrtle got drunk and mocked Daisy which made Nick punch her in the face and break her nose. Nick also attended one of Gatsby’s grand weekend parties where ran into Jordan and met Gatsby for the first time.
