You may take this story literally as it is supported by historical events and dates. For example The reconstruction of the wall in 445. B.C. E and the Exile in 538. The main characters in the story is God, people of God, Nehemiah, the king of Persia, Cyrus (559-530) B. C. E. The scene is Susa the Capital, the winter residence of Persians kings. This is a timeless truth, God impresses upon man heart. God is forever interceding in through the hearts of man to make a difference for mankind. God will cause other people to bless you in carrying out his mission. Once this thing is committed to him he will keep it until that day. Ultimately, we all have a burden to take up the cross and follow-him.
