Both articles, “Meanings and Functions in Chinese Landscape Painting” and “Narrative Framing,” analyze how the composition of the paintings show a specific purpose. In the former article, it explains how the paintings were used to commemorate someone leaving a village or place work. They also have pieces that were to celebrate someone’s retirement or even their fantasy of retiring. Many of these pieces were painted by “amateurs,” otherwise known as scholar-amateurs. Who were full-time scholars who painted as a hobby for themselves and colleagues. In the latter article they focus on the narrative framing in the “Tale of Genji Scroll.” It is a romantic novel that permeated throughout Japan for ages. The article highlights the scrolls’ use of
