Twas the night of Valentine’s Day during her freshman year of college. She lay in her dorm staring at the clock. Her heart sank deeper at every second that went by. Why isn’t he back? 10:30. 11:30. 12:30. 1:00 am. Finally around 3:30 am Chad burst into the room laughing. He threw himself onto the bed. “Christy, you have no clue. This night was amaaaaazing.” His breath reeked of alcohol. “I wish you had been back earlier,” Christy said wistfully. “I hoped that we were going to spend our Valentine’s night together.” Christy stared at the pictures of her friends and family awaiting Chad’s reply. “You always do this,” he slurred. “Why can’t I have a good time with you! You ruined my day. Always!” He started yelling. “Please, don’t get angry. I just missed you. Just please don’t get mad. You hung out with your friends last night. I just thought we could spend this night together,” she pleaded. Chad got up and started to leave. But as he opened the door to leave, he grabbed Christy’s Valentine’s envelope off the dresser. It contained a letter explaining why she loved him. “Please don’t leave. I don’t want to be alone,” Christy begged. Tears streamed down her face. Christy followed Chad to the elevator.

Everytime he would break up with Christy or when she had tried to leave him, he would always return. One moment he would yell at her and claim that he did not love her anymore and another week later, Chad came back begging for forgiveness. He would call her crying, buy her trinkets, write letters, and even talk to her parents about it. Every time he would swear he would change, that he would become a better person. Every time she had believed him. Maybe one day he would wake up and become the person she wanted him to be. But unfortunately, he’d be extremely cordial, affectionate, and sweet for a week or maybe a month. But he would always return to his cruel
