(an interpretive essay on the life of Nancy Zabriskie) After my grandfather died unexpectedly, my family sat around the table mourning his death. You know what you do when you sit around the table? You talk and you eat. Because of this, I was very overweight at birth when I was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1931. They could barely find my neck! After this, my mother swore to never get that heavy again. Unfortunately, she lost too much weight. My brother, Chuck, was underweight. They said he looked like a scrawny bird! In addition to Chuck, I had a sister who was three years older than me and a younger brother named Bob.

We didn’t have a gym at either of our schools, so we had gym class either outside or in the cafeteria. I walked to school everyday and played volleyball in high school. I enjoyed art class, even though I wasn’t very good at it. I got angry very easily! I was always questioning why we were doing the things we were in school.
It was also a big deal to go to the movies because we didn’t go very often. Throughout my life, the big movies I remember are Gone With the Wind, Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, The Sound of Music and Shirley Temple movies.
Growing up, the main other thing I did besides playing was listening to my mother play piano. We would all stand around her and sing along to the song she was playing.
For Christmas, we always went to my aunt’s and uncle’s house along with my cousins. We always ate in the kitchen, away from the adults. After dinner, we would go upstairs in the bedroom and make plays that we performed for the family. Every year, we saw a live show at a local theater, that was always my favorite part. We also liked to sled and, later on, watch the boys play
