Personal Narrative-High School Varsity Soccer Team

Improved Essays
It was the biggest night of our school history. My Proctor High School varsity soccer team and I were on our way to Morrisville, New York, where we would be playing our regionals championship match. Heading into the championship game, we were all focused and let nothing distract us from our mental state of concentration. There was nothing more we wanted than to make the night ours and make history for our beloved school. After triumphing in our sectional championship game against Cicero-North Syracuse (CNS) by a score of three-to-one, we found ourselves seventh seed coming up against New York State’s number one seeded team, Bethlehem. We knew we were up for a tough battle and a wild night. The night was a frigid, bone-chilling one. The noise heard across the stadium from all the fans added on to the rough conditions of the night, but we all remained as calm and concentrated as possible. Prior to kick-off, we listened to the national anthem, which sent goosebumps throughout every one of our bodies, until it was time to get the match started. The official blew his whistle, signaling kick-off and the biggest match of our lives began. Despite how focused our team was heading into the game, we found ourselves losing one-zero after only fifteen minutes. After conceding the goal, the rest of the first half was quiet and the whistle already blew for half-time. Our coach gave us a talk on how we needed to stay composed and pile the pressure up on Bethlehem in the second half, which was a gave us a huge boost of morale. We were ready to put up the biggest fight of our lives in the second half. A majority of the second half was quiet, but we were playing our hearts out and were desperate to find an equalizer. We did everything coach told us at the half-time break, but needed to apply finishing touches that we gave our all for. Time kept ticking down and in a blink of an eye, there were only seven minutes left for us to find a goal that would draw us level. At that instant, we won a free-kick about twenty-five yards out. Jose “ChoCho” Figueroa, who was a senior on our squad, laid the ball off to another fellow senior, Kevin Gordon who shot and…SCORED! It was a shot I would never forget; implemented in the back of my brain. Kevin Gordon sniped the ball over the wall, into the upper ninety of the net. Regulation time looked to end one-one as overtime loomed with golden goal. Unfortunately, there were fifteen to twenty seconds left when Bethlehem had a nice ball played through our defense and scored. I was utterly shocked as my heart completely stopped. We had lost...or that’s what I presumed happened. …show more content…
Time unfroze and all I saw were Bethlehem players surrounding the official and shouting out words of complaint. For what? It appeared to be that the ref called offside and the goal was withdrawn! We could not have been more relieved and overtime did loom. All the players were cramped up for overtime, so both halves of overtime were relatively quiet. Penalties would decide the champions. We were the first team to get penalties started. It was three-two on penalties after four out of the five shots, with our squad having the lead. It not only meant there was one more penalty left to take for both teams, but it also meant we would be crowned champions if we slotted home the penalty. My teammate, Said Begic, was the one to take the decisive penalty and he stepped up and...the power went off in the stadium. Both of our respective teams and the supporters were notified that there would be a fifteen minute delay until Said could take his decisive penalty that would seal the deal. Every one of us did our absolute best to keep Said calm and told him he just had to pick a spot and place the ball. Eventually, the power came back on and Said would take his penalty. He ran up towards the ball and he absolutely smashed it....way over the crossbar. However, there was a chance to still win if the Bethlehem player missed his penalty,

We were all glad to have placed well, but were overall disappointed in losing first place by one measly point. Setting the mood for remembering our countless failures and long practices, the seniors went around the group, giving each member of the team their own little speech. When they got to me, every single senior noted how much I had changed over the season. Listening to them recount the season to me, it truly hit me how different I was compared to the beginning of the season. Senior speeches had opened a book of memories for me.…

It was a brisk fall evening with the sun just about to set behind a hill. I was 10 years old, playing in my third season of football, and my first ever game under the bright lights surrounding the high school stadium. The time had finally come, the lights had been on and warming up for several minutes, I was going to play a game under the lights on the high school field. My experiences that night were not forgotten, but today I couldn’t even tell you if we won the game that night. The lessons I learned that night weren’t about winning and losing, I had done plenty of that already in my life.…
