The cafeteria was crowded and filled with mind-numbing noise. A few kids were playing and running around, while others sat at the tables and socialized with their friends. I looked around for my old friends and was about to approach them, but I noticed that they had already split up and found new groups of friends. I looked around in the crowded cafeteria and noticed the girl with leopard-print glasses sitting at a table in the center of the cafeteria. I went there and plopped down across from her. There were also two more girls at the table. They sat at either side of the girl with the leopard-print glasses. All three of them wore the youth group uniform and had shoulder-length hair. I couldn’t bring myself to strike a conversation first, because I always get nervous and anxious when talking to new people. We didn’t talk at all that lunch period. I sat at her table every time after every mass, but we didn’t say a thing to each other until after several months of sitting together.
Her name was Julia and we became very good friends. It took us a long time to become friends, because we were both shy and awkward. We became closer after that I mustered up my courage and suggested that we play tic-tac-toe together. Sunday school also helped us become better friends, because we were in the same class and desk mates. After a while, we also started to hang out outside of the youth group. We went to each other’s houses and did our homework together. She always listened to me and comforted me whenever I was sad.
