How can something so beautiful be so treacherous? I was so happy enjoying my day, but within seconds…pure joy turned into fear. It was a beautiful day spent at schliterbahn, but hours being in the same placed bored me. “Shes coming back right?” a baffled 7 year old asks in response to the appalling news of her mother’s death. A vibrant imagination is accompanied by a crushing pain of reality that trails behind it ; I discovered this when I heard the words “no” . 10 years later, that conversation lingers in my head and holds not a cacophonous nor euphonious sound, but instead holds the neutral tone of reality, an alarm . As routine , at 6a.m., I hear a melodious alarm followed by the pitter-patter of my aunt who is getting ready for work.…

When I think about the boy who I was growing up, the young adult I am today, and the man I plan to be in the forthcoming years, one aspect of my life stands out to me far more radiantly than anything else: my culture, my skin, my identity as a Bangladeshi-American. There aren't many clubs or organization for Bangladeshi Americans such as myself. Make no mistake, there are certainly events for Bangladeshis living in the United states, many that I have attended due to various entreaties from my parents. These are event where the only language spoken is one that I barely speak (Bengali), the only music conversed about is that which I don't listen to or understand, and the only events discussed happen in another country that I have spent only a…

I am someone who smiles Someone always telling jokes to make sure no one thinks something is wrong So no one suspects a thing when they see my smile I am someone who fixes the feelings of those whose hearts are shattering like pieces of glass I am someone who loves to dress up and wear makeup so no one sees how truly I am From the bags from staying up at night to the red from crying, both under the concealer Tears behind my eyeshadow-covered eyelids Cracks underneath my red lipstick And the pain within the mouth that contains whitened teeth…

There are approximately 397,000 children in foster care in the United States of America currently and I used to be one of them. However, foster had not even been near the forefront of my mind that summer. The summer before I started my first year of high school, I had plenty of anxiety about the tall tale I invented in my own mind that stood before me. Stories about how hard high school were numerous and often regaled on the crowded bus ride home by high schoolers who seemed to have the knowledge of every wise teacher in history combined. which that scared me to death; I had always held my position as a good student who followed the rules of my middle school.…

This is seen in many places in today’s world, like political models, society’s values, and debates on environment based on science. Similar to almost everyone, life presented me with a chance of change when I was fairly young, end of 4th grade to be exact. I was asked by my parents to switch schools from a local medium to international medium of studies in India.…

Change Have you ever been so moved by something it changed you to do something out of character, or ever see a kind gesture and thought of the beauty if change had covered the world? Similar to Paul Logan in the story “Zero”, I became cocooned in change and my eyes will forever see the world and people living in it through another lens. To begin, I always had a heart for people, but most the time just had the connection from a distance, not enough to impact any lives or great change. Driving to a play downtown after a nice dinner my boyfriend Marcus and I came across a filthy man and his faded sign stating a simple message “Im hungry” on the front, Marcus gave him our leftover food and smiled.…
