Narrative Essay On The Last Day Of The Day

I didn’t have a raincoat, so I searched several closets in the house before finding an old trench model that belonged to my dad. It had enough buttons, buckles and decorative flaps for ten coats. Climbing into it, it smelled of mothballs and hung on my shoulders, airless and heavy, like an old canvas tent. How he ever wore this thing, I’ll never know. Now it was my turn to try. The rep had exceeded her quota, which meant she’d receive a bonus with her next commission check. From where I was sitting, I could see her becoming giddy with surprise, her smile flashing on high beam.
My sales manager made a show of ruffling the sheet of paper, preparing to call out the next name.
I felt my breath catch in my throat.
“Next, we have…”

A stifling, sweltering heat came over her. She wasn’t sure whether it was the generally feverish July weather, the soaring tenacious grip of her high neckline, or the unwavering perlustration of 300 pairs of eyes gazing up at her. His eyes brushed down a list of names quickly and came to a sudden halt. With a glance toward me, he called me to the front of the room to present my work from the day before. They were experienced "AP students," the best of the best, I was a mere peasant in their presence. Reluctantly, I made my way to the front of the room and with an unsure hand slid my work under the projector screen.…

The Last Day Sweat was gleaming off my face as I finished lifting our couch into my mother’s van. It was a familiar action, we has always been moving around. We had held many houses for rent, each for one year at a time. We never stayed anywhere for long, presumably because nobody liked renting to single mothers with five kids. We were always drifters, seeking houses for rent and never having a permanent situation.…
