Could you ever imagine a life of having everything chosen for you? The Giver is a book where the leaders of a futuristic community want everyone to be as similar as possible. They ensure this by having everyone wear the same clothes and have the haircuts. To keep safety and peace in the community the citizens are given no freedoms. Citizens are given their spouses and jobs based on observations made about them. The people do not have colors or feelings. When Jonas is given his job he is selected to become the next receiver of memory, he trains alone with a old man who is called the Giver. The receiver of memory takes all of the memories of the past both pleasant and unpleasant. The line between public safety and personal freedoms should be drawn somewhere where public safety does not affect the way people live. One of the first things he discovers is color. At one training session Jonas asks the Giver what his favorite memory is. The Giver responds by showing Jonas a memory of a family at Christmas with a fire and love. “‘I liked the feeling of love,’ he confessed. He glanced nervously at the speaker on the wall, reassuring himself that no one was listening ‘I wish we still had that,’”(p.126). Jonas liked the feeling of love, but thought it was a dangerous way to live. Citizens are assigned spouses by which jobs people have and what kind of personalities people have. Arranged marriages were the only thing that people knew so they liked and accepted it. If not for stirring pills people might have wanted to be alone or might of wanted to be with someone that was the same gender. Having someone be assigned to be with someone else prevents people being alone and sadness of not having anyone. In our society how we interact with people is with feelings both good and bad.
