Gettysburg Movie Analysis

I chose the film Gettysburg because it provides a great overview of the battle of Gettysburg. Gettysburg is a 1993 American war film. The film tells the story of the battle between the Union and confederate armies during the Civil War. The movie made sure to capture each day of the battle, which lasted three days. I was kind of confused at first because the film had no clear protagonist and antagonist. After all, the film did an outstanding job at representing the dramatic intensity of each battle scene.
Gettysburg was written and directed by Ronald F. Maxwell. The movie was shot on the actual locations in Gettysburg National Park. This film contains fine performances from Tom Berenger as James Longstreet, and from Richard Jordan as Lewis Armistead and many more. Martin Sheen and Jeff Daniels give, in my opinion, the greatest performance in this film.

During the entire film you see the huge amount of weapons the soldiers had to use to fight. One of the most deadly weapons was the triangular bayonets. The shape that it left made it nearly impossible to sew up causing most soldiers to bleed to death. Another effective weapon used in this film was the canister shot fired from cannons. A canister shot would shoot out balls and hit several targets. Also, whenever a cannon shot it created a type of smoke which made it difficult for the opponents to see. Gettysburg showed violence in a clever way which I love.
The significant and most important thing that I got out of the film was greatly enhanced respect for the bravery of all the individuals involved in the battle. Seeing it acted out by talented actors is so much more powerful than reading about it. Also, I had never thought about the impact music had on the Civil War soldiers until I saw this movie. Music was very important, because it helped soldiers celebrate their cause and

I would say Paths of Glory is vastly different than the other war movies I have seen. First off you don’t see much fighting in this movie. Also most war movies are usually long movies for example Apocalypse Now is 2 hours 33min and Saving Private Ryan is 2 hours 49min and Oliver Stone’s Platoon is at least 2 hours compared to Paths of Glory is 1 hour 28min. After I watched Paths of Glory it sort of reminded me of Platoon.…

The films locations, backgrounds, clothing, and speech all needed to be realistic to produce a stage and the frame of mind that will allow the viewer to be absorbed into a story that they are most likely already familiar with.
