Narrative Essay On Tennis

During the summer before my freshman year of high school my mom insisted that I try something new to get involved. I decided to try tennis and my mom drove me to my first workout of the summer. I was extremely nervous when I realized that I barely knew anyone there. There was five seniors, two juniors, two sophomores, and me. I went to every practice and caught on really quick to a sport I had barely ever heard of. I usually played exhibition matches which helped me improve my game, but I eventually got to play the sixth seed two times, winning each of them. As you can tell my game of tennis got a lot better over the season but this story isn’t about my skills as a tennis player. It’s about how tennis sparked a confidence in me that grew me as a person.
There is a day during my freshman year that I will never forget, it is the day I got my first nickname. I was at one of my tennis practices and all the girls were practicing together. When it was my turn to hit the ball, I hit it out. My coach, Ms. Tobar, began to fuss at me for it. One of the seniors, Jessica Worley, said to her “don’t fuss at her Ms. Tobar, she’s just a little turtle.” I still don’t know why she chose to call me a “little turtle”. I have fallen in love with the game and plan to keep playing as long as I am able. I may not be on the collegiate level but my passion for the sport is what keeps me going. Even though a lot of this story was about tennis and all my accomplishments in it, none of it would have happened if I hadn’t have been named “Little Turtle”. I am so grateful I had the opportunity to meet those five seniors and am blessed to say I am now in their shoes. It is a bittersweet feeling looking back to my freshman year and realizing my time in high school is now coming to an end. I pray that I too will get the opportunity to influence someone’s life, just as those girls did
