When people think of the word “addicting”, they usually think of drugs or video games. The word “addicting” has a negative connotation, usually representing an unhealthy inability to stop. So naturally, no one would think of an app that’s limited to 10 seconds of entertainment at a time. At least, I thought I would not. But Snapchat has firmly ingrained its way into my life. Advertised as “The Fastest Way to Share a Moment!” (Snapchat), Snapchat quickly changed me into someone that can’t put down the phone. I was never the kid that would always hang out with friends outside of school. In fact, I was the kid that woke up, went to school, and went back home only to repeat the cycle the next day. For example, one Snapchat user could have a “streak” with another Snapchat user. A “streak” is essentially a numerical counter that shows how many consecutive days a user and the other user have Snapchatted each other. If 24 hours pass without both users Snapchatting each other, the streak “dies” (the number disappears). It seemed so appealing to me to have both quality and quantity streaks. Upon learning if someone else had Snapchat, I would ask to start a streak. The first thing I would do after I woke up every morning was to send my “streak Snapchat” to everyone. This was usually just a picture of my room with the word “streaks” as a caption. While any indifferent person might view a streak as a superficial number, I viewed it as an accomplishment. “How big is your streak with Maggie?”, my friends would ask. I would reply with “Oh, it’s over 300 days!” Some might have viewed that as a clear addiction, but I viewed it as a dedication to maintain a friendship.
