Hearing the muffled sound of guns firing and seeing everything in a shade of yellow has been a normal Saturday morning for me since I was about ten. The day starts off with a drive to the Los Altos Rod & Gun Club or the Sunnyvale Rod & Gun Club with my dad. Knowing that I am about to shoot a variety of guns consisting of: shotguns, pistols, and rifles; causes my heart rate to go up. I am usually the only girl at the shooting range, and I am not the only one to notice. Whenever I step up to take my round of shooting there is always a line of viewers that gathers to watch. For most people, this pressure would make them feel uncomfortable, but for me it motivates me to show them that a girl can shoot. My average trap shooting score ranges from twenty two to twenty four out of twenty five, and once in awhile I get twenty five. This always amazes the spectators. I think that being the only girl there and doing well has showed people that gender does not change ones ability to accomplish things. It is all about hard work and perseverance. It has taken a lot of practice and time for me to get to the level I am at today. I think that it is very important to step …show more content…
I dislike the fact that people make assumptions due to gender, so by showing people that they are wrong I feel like I am taking a stand against common stereotypes. Shooting alongside grown men that are double my size can seem intimidating, and at first it was, but being exposed to this has shaped how I deal with many other situations and problems in my life. I definitely do not feel as intimidated anymore when I am faced with new situations that I may feel uncomfortable in. Having confidence in oneself is key to succeeding and learning in life, and shooting has definitely given me a lot of confidence. I have also learned that stereotypes can be proven wrong, nothing is set in stone on what I can and can not

Growing up, almost every single girl my age played soccer, but I on the other hand, found myself spending a lot of my weekends at the Koko Head Shooting Range. I first learned how to shoot when I was 9 years old and since then, I have been utterly hooked. However, I never really talked about this passion with my friends because when most people hear the word “gun” or “shooting” they associate those words with violence and crime. But to me, this hobby represents so much more. Even though I always found excuses to not try out for the air riflery team at my high school, I still believe that shooting is an exemplary individual sport that assists in developing critical life skills.…

In High School we were sadly not taught about the May 4th shooting and as a High School history teacher that is something that I want to teach my students because it is such a big thing. At DKS is the first time I actually heard the story. A boy was very knowledgeable on the topic. I was told that the US guardsmen shot and killed 4 people and 1, a girl, was simple walking to class. He told us that prior to this date that there was ruckus due to a biker gang and they threatened a guardsmen and the guardsmen thought it was one of the students, however, at the May 4th center I learn that the guardsmen weren’t even at Kent state yet until after that date.…

We talk an awful lot about mass shootings in our society. Often used as an example in culture’s conversations on racial tension, mental health, gun control, and ‘zero-tolerance’ school policies, they are full of shock value. However, there is a detail I hear mentioned in many of these shooting cases that does not get pressed as a bigger issue. Reports often cite a shooter’s web postings as evidence of their plans, worldview, and mental and emotional states. However, what I never hear the reporter ask, is “What did other internet users say in response to these postings?”…

Mass Shootings and the Moral Decline in the U.S. Megan jones 2 There have been over 294 mass shootings in the U.S so far in 2015. Many people have been left wounded or dead due to them. Yet they have very little attention payed to them due to a combination of the FBI’s definition of a mass shooting being when 4 or more people are killed, and because no one who enjoys a lack of gun control wants to put an emphasis on the fact that people are being killed, very easily, because of guns. Mass shootings have become so routine that unless they are absolutely disgusting and horrendous, very little focus is put on them, and even when they are disgusting and horrendous, the media, along with individuals, tend to sensationalize the shooting and act…

The occurrence of mass shootings and acts of terrorism have become increasingly common in the United States since the twenty-first century. Since 2000, thousands of United States citizens have died as a direct result of mass shootings and acts of terrorism. However, despite the striking similarities in the motives and damage engendered by these crimes, there are significant discrepancies between the classifications and punishments for the crimes. Depending on the crime, state or federal governments determine the way each incident is managed including the charges brought against the perpetrator, the process he or she goes through to be convicted, and subsequently the penalty the person faces for committing either crime. Though similar in nature…

The sports world also needs to start recognizing the talent women have and not just the appearance of them. In most of the sports women play the uniforms reveal much more skin than in male sports. Women’s talents are often over looked more than their natural talents to play specific sports. Another reason women have a hard time playing male dominated sports is because people feel the women will be a distraction to the men.
