Saving Lemonade Lightning clashed against the ground as hurricane Harvey pummeled the southeast coast of Texas for the third day in a row. My house was in a flood zone but hadn’t taken on water since the flood of ‘94, so although we had our worries it wasn’t something that we were losing sleep over. More and more rain began to fall by the instance and we received word that water was being released for the Lake Conroe dam at a pace that had never been reached before. The water began to flow over the streets and I saw the hope leave my parents eyes. We packed up our essentials and went to a hotel, but I was forced to abandon my leave my 6 month old crested gecko named lemonade. My mother showered me with plenty of reassurances like, “the water won’t get too high” and “she’ll be fine”. But as I looked back down my street, and watched my house get smaller and smaller, I felt nothing but an overwhelming guilt nagging at my heart. Although it may be impossible to imagine someone caring so much for a reptile, I had raised her since birth and she and I had created a bond that felt special.
The day I adopted her I truly wasn’t looking for a pet, but she caught my eye and gave me small smile that stuck with me. She was the most yellow creature I had ever laid my eyes upon, which lead to give her the name “Lemonade”. Throughout the following months I held her almost every day as

I slowly got out of bed, which required a tremendous effort as my body felt battered and exhausted. I made my way to her enclosure.
