Once upon a time I was in an enclosed elevator in Hecht Residential College at the University of Miami. As I stood there, I noticed several interesting things, such as everyone who entered were either already on their phones or immediately took them out, all not brave enough to interrupt the awkward silence. I was particularly intrigued by the resident assistants, dressed in fishnet stockings and morph suits, handing out candy to each student who entered the elevator. They were the only ones unafraid to disrupt that awkward silence. Suddenly, I had a revelation. I realized that when humans are put in uncomfortable situations, even for just 70 seconds, they automatically rely on technology to save them, thus ultimately losing social skills.

This means that unless you know every single person in your tower, you will endure at least one awkward elevator ride. The type of ride where everyone is just staring at a blank screen on their phone, pretending to text something super important while avoiding eye contact at all cost. And let’s face it- we are all guilty of this crime. Now depending on which floor you live, you may be able to skip the dragon altogether and take the stairs. Looking forward, what will happen when the world is faced with longer and more intense awkward situations? Will a phone be enough to avoid the situation or will we need something larger and more interactive? How will we improve our social skills with the demand to avoid others in uncomfortable conditions? Will they completely fade one day? We don’t know if the princes and princesses will realize that the queen is behind it all, or if they will ever defeat the awkward silence that accompanies the dragon. And since there are now millions of dragons all over the world, what will stop the evil queen from creating a new way for humans to need her? Instead of trying to destroy her altogether, we have to earn how to live with her, maybe change her evil ways, teach her how to be a better person. All we can do is wait for a miracle to happen; wait for our happily ever
