This one female student, out of a thousand other girls, was brought out of her classroom. She was a slim young girl, wearing a shoulder-cut out shirt with jeans. She had an excessive four inches of skin showing on her shoulder, with a two inch strap and sleeves down to her hands, as if exposing herself like an open book. When I saw the girl look in the mirror that hung on the wall of the office, I saw the mystery, the unspeakable wrongness, of correcting a female’s wardrobe when she is just expressing herself. This student did no wrong, she was just dressing herself like the rest of us do every day. All of her skills in education she possessed were working- wrote all of her homework out, aced all of her tests, arrived on time, listened and respected the teachers- all compromised for a punishment. Her skills could still be used when she was at the office, when she was being shamed for her clothes. Her eyes weren’t looking at the chalk board but at the sign addressing how body parts can be exposing, and her brain still remembered, foresaw, reasoned- reasoned even about the essay due in two weeks. Her and all other members of the school were all walking together, seeing, hearing, feeling, and learning about the real world; and in 20 minutes, with a call out of class, she would be absent- one student less, one brain
