Narrative Essay On Overcoming Oppression

As I have matured into the person I currently am, I have grown not only physically, but also intellectually. I have forced myself to become more aware of the society I live in and of its ailments, which are homophobia, racism, and sexism. I have come to realize that those who suffer from the oppression of these prejudices are unable to speak out against these issues and truly be heard. I believe that it is important to listen to these people and their experiences so that I may become an ally because others may be more likely to listen to me. Just as Malala Yousafzai has raised her voice, I have raised my voice for those who are not straight, those who are not white, and for those who are not male. To begin with, it has become apparent to me that people do not listen to those being oppressed because of institutionalized homophobia, institutionalized racism, and patriarchy. These devices not only inhibit those who aren't straight, white, or male from truly participating in society, but also from being heard and understood. Social media is a way for information to be spread, and this information is usually filled with misconceptions. Anytime I see incorrect information, I do my best to correct it. I often post information on my own or create artwork to increase others’ understanding of those oppressed and the systems that are working against them. When people have correct information presented to them, they generally become more tolerant because they understand that sexuality, race, and gender are not a choice.
