My book, The Short and Tragic Life of Robert Peace by Jeff Hobbs, details the titular individual’s journey from the impoverished streets of Newark to the prestigious corridors of Yale University as a result of his academic brilliance. Born in East Orange, New Jersey, Robert Peace, the protagonist and subject of the story, had displayed an aptitude for education at an early age, a trait fostered by his father, Skeet, who had often attended his child as he completed his assignments. Robert’s mother, Jackie, had been aware of his extensive knowledge, prompting her to remove him the public schools of East Orange, which functioned as a method of restraining, rather than educating, children, and placing him in a private Catholic school in the vicinity…

Jeff Hobbs’ story The Short and Tragic Life of Robert Peace by Jeff Hobbs is centered on the life of a young, black man named Robert Peace who moves from an impoverished childhood in the outskirts of Newark, to the mainly white dominated Yale University, and finally, to his untimely and unsolved murder (Hobbs, 2015). Jeff Hobbs selects the topic to depict the unfortunate turn of events for the main character Robert Peace that eventually led to his death. Jeff, having been a roommate with Robert at Yale, thought that Robert’s life had been rocked with unfortunate situations from his childhood and when things seemed bright, tragedy struck time after time. The title of the story makes it clear from the onset that the story comprises of unfortunate…

These words are among Gene’s final musings in the novel, as he reflects on the meaning of his experiences at Devon and then in the war. He suggests that every human being, at a certain point in his or her life, decides that the world is a fundamentally hostile place and subsequently finds enemies to fight with and kill. He believes that for most of his classmates, this moment came with fighting in World War II, with real enemies—but for himself, it came before the onset of military violence or the arrival of army-issued weapons; Gene fought his war while still at Devon.…

In his youth and college experience, Robert Peace is faced with many cultural obstacles and cultural benefits which either held him back or supported him in life. In The Short and Tragic Life of Robert Peace we see the effect of many cultural elements which played upon the life perspectives of Robert Peace and the many people involved in his life, such as his Mother and Father and Jeff Hobbs and his friends. There were many cultural elements at play, including, but not limited to, race, gender, social status, self identity, community influence, work/employment, religion, etc. Some examples of these cultural elements at play can be seen throughout the book. I believe some of the more prominent examples of culture upon Robert Peace and the others…

This term I started out with what I thought was a pretty easy reading goal. My goal was to read at least two hours every week, not counting the time we read at the beginning of English. I read many articles, mostly things from Buzzfeed, and The Onion. I also started rereading Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets when I was in school, outside of school I just finished reading A Separate Peace by John Knowles. Overall I don’t think I met my goal, because some weeks I wouldn’t read at all and other weeks I had read for probably fifteen hours or more, and I never had a very consistent reading schedule.…

~Sticking to the Script~ I. Felicitous I let out a long sigh as I walked along the beach’s crowded boardwalk, alone. Johanna, my twenty-four year old sister, had pulled me here an hour earlier to have a fun night together (her words, not mine). I was going to save my social tolerance for her wedding in half a week, but I didn’t want to disappoint her. So I gave in to her request, only to be left a short time later.…
