I focus on my steps which echo on the stage in unison with the calm beat of the music. This is it, the moment I have been preparing for non-stop for months.
I am dancing Swan Lake. My name is Odette.
Alright, so my name isn’t actually Odette, it’s Annie. The boring, brunette, ballerina who likes to escape into fantasy lands such as the land of the Nutcracker, Swan Lake, or Cinderella.
However, the only way I can do this is through my dancing. This is a good thing because years ago I had devoted my mind, body, and soul to ballet. It has become my life. In many ways it has become my career, my future. Often now I wonder if this dancing is what led to my parents’ divorce.
That split hurt a lot. Not only had my mom and my dad, who had been married for fifteen years, had their hearts broken, my sister and I did as well. She and I were split. I went with my mom and she stayed with my dad. This was made it nearly impossible to communicate with her. That’s why secretly we communicated over Skype a couple of times. I practice dance 24/7. My schedule consists of three main factors: school, work, and dance. This is the repetitive norm for me.
