Narrative Essay On North Carolina High School

It was the night of September 28th and I could not sleep. I was so nervous because the next morning I had my audition for North Carolina High-School Honors Choir. Although I practiced for weeks and sang for my chorus teacher countless times, I never knew of what could have happened in my five minute audition. I would have to warm up and sing an excerpt of the audition piece “Sing Ye to the Lord.” Then I would have 60 seconds to study an 8-measure line of sight singing. Going into the audition room I was as nervous as can be but walking out I knew that whatever happened I was proud of myself. The weekend following my audition all I could think about was if I was accepted or not. So needless to say I had a couple more sleepless nights. …show more content…
With only about a month to learn these pieces I knew I needed to work hard. I practiced everyday during and after school to prepare for this special event. It was verbalized to the students that if you did not know your part to the music you would be sent home. I made sure I was not going to be one of them. So on November 10th my parents and I were on our way to Winston-Salem for the long and exhilarating weekend to come. The weekend I had been waiting for for weeks. I walked into rehearsal at 8:45 am still with butterflies in stomach as we were asked to perform all seven songs right then and there. There were teachers walking up and down all five rows making sure everyone knew their part. Luckily, all 179 of us passed the test and we continued to warm up and meet Dr. Kenny Potter, the clinician for 2017 North Carolina High School Honors Choir. He helped us perfect not only our music but our performance overall. I was so impressed with how Dr. Potter got 179 high schoolers to be on the same page at once. It felt like all of us had been singing together for years, not just one day. After that long and impactful 8-hour day of singing everyone was ready for the actual

My first memory at North Carolina Governor’s School West is of crying next to my parents on a bench under a giant tree. It was move-in day for the five-and-a-half-week session, and I was already sure that they would be the worst weeks of my life. I was terrified; I knew no one except two students from my high school, who were rising juniors and to whom I had never spoken before. After that stressful first day, I fell asleep unsure of how I could make it on my own in a place filled with such talented, intelligent, and unfamiliar people. A week later, I knew that Governor’s School would be one of the most treasured experiences of my entire life.…

Dr. Hill has this way of instilling so much confidence in a person. It’s like he pulls it out of thin air. At Governor’s School, whenever we were handed difficult pieces of music, he never doubted us for a second. I think what gave us so much confidence was the confidence that he had in us. He intrusted us with difficult music and his time off from work, believing in a group of highschoolers that we wouldn’t let him down.…

I honestly did not believe that I was nor did I carry myself as a leader until I got to Wilson High School. In middle school, at church, and within the different programs I am a part I was given leadership positions and was “successful” in them but Wilson High School and its community have taught me what it truly means to be a successful leader. A large part of my high school career has been dedicated to the cheerleading program here at Wilson High School. This is the aspect of my life that has developed my leadership skills such as communication, patience, innovation, flexibility, planning and much more. My coaches, teachers, and teammates have all pushed me to become the leader that I am.…

This past Saturday I had the great honor of attending the South East Iowa Honor Band (SEIBA) auditions, a prestigious competition where music students from all of southeast Iowa have the opportunity to undergo an intense audition process including, but not limited to, arthritis from excessive preparation, mental breakdowns, glares from judges that could kill you with one look, and sugar overdoses from their wide variety of healthy options available for breakfast, lunch, and dinner at the concession stands. Alright, it’s not actually that intense, but you get the picture. This day is full of excitement and nerves and disappointment as one five minute audition stands between months of hard-work and your personal goals. Sadly enough, as important…

On May 9, 2015, Garvey’s Advanced Band and Mustang Choir went to the Trills and Thrills Festival at Burbank Middle School. We had to be at school by 7:15 AM since it was our call time, and that was way too early for me since I usually sleep at 12 AM. I was in Advanced Band and I played the clarinet. Of course I was excited to play at the competition, but I was also nervous since we were going to Six Flags afterwards and I had a huge fear of heights.…

Even though everyone who goes to Shakopee High School knows about this situation, they do not know how much it has significantly affected my life. My life changed last year in so many ways. In some ways this has given me more opportunities, but in most cases this event has negatively changed everything around me. Worst of all it has made me lose many friends, given me a bad reputation, and has made everyone think that I am someone that I am not. People I had never met did not like me, discriminated against me in some situations; but on the other hand, it has showed me who my real friends are because they continued to persevere by my side and stuck with me through all of the tough times.…

The semester before my freshman year I applied to an early college high school; I knew that I was going to have more work than if I had went to the traditional high school, but I knew I could do it. At first I was doing well, but as time went on the work became more challenging and frequent eventually my grades fell and took my pride with it. I wanted to transfer to the traditional high school in my neighborhood, but changed my mind after a talk with one of my professors. She helped me to recognize that if I quit not only would I be throwing away the work that I did do, but I’d also be preventing myself from seeing what work I could do. I took that seed of information and turned it into a tree of motivation.…

Since moving to Bettendorf for my High School years I have learned more than I could imagine and for that, I will be grateful for forever. I have learned more about myself, more in school, and most importantly I have learned from my mistakes including how to fix them to prevent myself from ever making them again. Everyone makes mistakes and may possibly get in trouble for these. I will never forget Bettendorf High School nor February 28th, 2018. February 28th was a day that has changed how I think about my best friends, and also made think about everyone a lot more than I did before.…

My nerves and anxiety had passed; I stood tall, confident in my abilities and all the preparations I had done for the audition. Afterwards, I was very proud of my performance, but I didn’t know if it was enough to earn a seat in the ensemble. Upon finding out that I did not make it into the choir, I was crushed. I felt like my months of hard work had been ruined and I would be a disappointment to my family. I vowed that I wouldn’t waste my time with auditioning for the chorus again the next year.…

I was shocked and felt the same twinge in my stomach that I did before my audition. I knew that this was just the beginning of my journey and that I had a lot of hardwork left. I immediately began practicing and had the solos down, except none of the reeds I was making were good enough. Then, the last week before the intensive rehearsals and concert, I managed to make 3 good reeds. About half way through my first rehearsal my first solo came up…

The summer between my sophomore year and junior year was a life changing period. For one, my mother and I moved to Waco, Texas, an 8-hour drive from my home of Weslaco. Along with this new address, I also had a new school. Naturally, I went to the school nearest my home, Connally High School. I didn’t know it on my first day of school, but Connally High School would become my 2nd out of 3 high schools I would attend.…
