As we were leaving Independence, Marvin started to groan very loudly. I shuffled to the corner of the wagon where he was sleeping and saw blood covering his button up plaid shirt. I searched through the trunk and found the first aid kit. I popped open the kit and grabbed the alcohol. There was a small wrap that I used to keep the blood in. One of the guys in our wagon train came to help and told me to keep the kids calm. Not long after he told me that it was just a scratch from an open nail in the wood, but it caused a bad infection. The next morning, we woke up to the sound of a river. I got up to look outside and we were gliding across the bank of the Kansas River. The smell of fresh air delighted me. I haven't smelled such a thing
