As a teenager growing up in Desert Hot Springs, it was normal occurrence to go out of your way to avoid altercations involving gangs, violence or drugs. With very few alternatives I chose to spend most of my free time either riding bikes at the newly built bike park or volunteering to escort younger kids from school to the boys and girls club. Then in early 2009 with gang activity at an all-time high, 35 separate law enforcement agencies coordinated and executed Operation Falling Sun, a paramilitary operation tasked with taking back control of the city.
